A command-line package utility for Windows providing ways to update, install and uninstall packages similar to a Linux package manager.
Windows Package Manager is a free and open source package management app and install tool, developed by Microsoft for Windows. It's pretty comprehensive.
The download has been tested by an editor here on a PC and a list of features has been compiled; see below. We've also created some screenshots of Windows Package Manager to illustrate the user interface and show the overall usage and features of this package management program.
Practical program installation library with winget
Windows Package Manager is a comprehensive package manager solution that consists of a command line tool and set of services for installing applications on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
If you have to install several programs, for example because you are setting up your computer again, this involves a lot of work. Each installation file must be individually located, downloaded, and then run. This process is greatly shortened with the Windows Package Manager from Microsoft.
Once you have run the installation, you can access the tool from the command line using the winget command. With the addition search you can either search specifically for programs or display the entire list of available tools.
All entries present in the listing can be installed immediately with the winget install command without any further steps. If you notice that an important tool is missing, you can submit a corresponding package via the repository function and thus make it available for yourself and other users.
For the time being, there will probably not be an official method of using the tool without the command line. If you still want to use the Package Manager without having to resort to the command line, the HandyWinget GUI provides a suitable graphical user interface.
